Erythropoietin (EPO) is a hormone, primarily produced by the kidneys, that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. It is released in response to low oxygen levels in the body and plays a crucial role in oxygen transport throughout the body. Low EPO levels can cause anemia, while high levels can lead to polycythemia. Recombinant forms of EPO are used medically to treat anemias associated with chronic kidney disease and chemotherapy.

What Erythropoietin Does

Stimulates Red Blood Cell Production:

Polycythemia:
Too much EPO can result in an abnormally high red blood cell count (polycythemia), which can cause symptoms like weakness, fatigue, and headaches.
Erythropoiesis-Stimulating Agents (ESAs):
Pharmacologically produced recombinant forms of EPO, such as epoetin, are used as medications to treat anemia in patients with chronic kidney disease or those undergoing cancer chemotherapy.
