Eltrombopag is used to treat thrombocytopenia (low platelets in the blood) in patients with a blood disorder called chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). This medicine is used after a splenectomy (surgery to remove the spleen) and other medicines (eg, steroids or immunoglobulin) have not worked well enough.

Eltrombopag should not be taken with foods, drinks, or other medicines that contain high concentrations of calcium, iron, magnesium, aluminium, selenium or zinc. the interaction is not harmful, but it does stop your body from being able to absorb eltrombopag properly, which means it won't work as well.

The patients who responded to eltrombopag had a slightly higher platelet count and lower immature platelet fraction before starting treatment than those who did not respond (Figure 2). There was no difference in platelet size or AIPF between eltrombopag responders and nonresponders
